It can be very challenging to maintain healthy eating and living while travelling, but it’s possible. All you need is to maintain intention. It’s easier said than done indeed but it’s possible. Below are a few rules I go by while travelling that help me stay healthy during my trips:
1. HYDRATE
Always stay hydrated, and that starts before you get on your flight. It’s well known that flying dehydrates you big time!
Humidity levels drop during your flight, and that causes dehydration.
Therefore, I drink a lot of water before, during and after my flight (but don’t drink it too fast). You also shouldn’t forget to put hydrating lotions and creams on your face and skin before and during your flight.
Hydrate not only during the flight but frequently during your trip. We tend to forget to drink water, make it a point to always have a bottle of water with you so that you don’t forget.
2. SLEEP WELL
Get a good night’s sleep. That’s when your body resets and it’s an important way to stay healthy. Your body needs adequate rest when you’re travelling to keep going. If you’re travelling far, one of the best ways to reduce the effect of jet lag is to try to adjust your internal clock before traveling.
So, if I’m going to a place that So, if I’m going to a place that’s 6 hours ahead, for example, I’d try and go to bed a little later than usual to start adjusting my body. Another tip is to stay awake as much as you can after a long flight and to go to bed at a decent hour (destination time). You will wake up pretty early, but I love to wake up really early while travelling, it gives me the chance to enjoy the whole day!
If you have trouble sleeping, try drinking chamomile tea, or try using lavender essential oil (a few drops on the pillow) it helps calm the body and mind.
3. DON’T GIVE UP ON YOUR HEALTHY EATING HABITS
Try to make at least 75% of your meals healthy. Find some kind of balance, I usually try not to eat two “bad” meals in a row.
4. DON’T FORGET TO HAVE BREAKFAST
The most important meal of the day. Don’t skip it. And try to make it as healthy as possible – have brown bread instead of white bread and eat a lot of fruits.
5. WALK A LOT, OR TAKE A BIKE
The best way to discover a country you’ve never been to is to either walk or take a bike. It isn’t only a fantastic way to discover the city but it’s also a great way to stay in shape and build a healthy body. You’d be surprised how easy it is to keep your metabolism moving just by walking.
6. PROTECT YOUR SKIN
We all want to tan, but protecting your skin is one of the most important things you should be doing. Your older self will thank you for that.
Last but not least try to stick to your usual routine so that your body doesn’t go crazy on you and enjoy your trip!
